

American Sign Language I

ASL 1 is an introductory course designed to help students develop basic communication skills in American Sign Language (ASL). Students will learn fundamental vocabulary, grammar, and conversational techniques, as well as fingerspelling and numbers. The course emphasizes expressive and receptive skills through interactive activities and real-world practice. Additionally, students will explore Deaf culture, history, and community, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of the language and those who use it.
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
Use basic ASL vocabulary and grammar in conversations.
Introduce themselves and share personal information.
Ask and answer simple questions in ASL.
Comprehend and produce fingerspelling and numbers.
Demonstrate an understanding of Deaf culture and etiquette.
This course is ideal for beginners with little or no prior experience with ASL. It provides a solid foundation for further study and meaningful interaction with the Deaf community.
NOTE: This course could be used for high school credit
